THE GALLE SHIP WRECK

THE GALLE SHIP WRECK

The cause of the Galle Ship Wreck dive site is still unconfirmed and left for the diver’s imagination as the area has been filled in during the development of the harbour. However, it is believed that the site was either a shipwreck or possibly a place where a cannon had been abandoned, perhaps from a battery on a Gibbet Island. Here we can still see approximately 20 large iron cannons; some of the cannons on the shoreward area of the site have unfortunately been badly eroded by sand abrasion, as well as the bore of the gun is exposed. The location of these ancient iron cannons is between Gibbet and Closenberg Islands.

The depth of this dive site is approximately 18 meters. Recommended for Advanced Divers only.

Marine life at this site includes corals, sponges, numerous species of reef fish including snappers, angelfish, porcupine fish and moray eels.
